It is one thing to say that you want to help a segment of the population. But it is another thing to actually do so. When The Honor Movement Foundation says it aims to assist those that are veterans, active duty military, or first responders, and their families, well, we walk the walk, both literally and figuratively.

Clearing the Hurdles to Recovery

One of our highest priorities is helping veterans, active duty personnel, and first responders to find their way to recovery. There are many obstacles that can keep a person from recovery options. We at The Honor Movement Foundation make it a point to clear those hurdles and assist those ready for help right to its front door.

When you donate to The Honor Movement Foundation, you are directly funding these efforts to help men and women on their road to recovery. From logistical needs to financial difficulties, we pave the way for them to simply focus on themselves, something many of our population struggle to do.

Those we serve, who’ve spent their lives serving our country, may need recovery from:

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Depression

Addiction

Physical injuries

Whatever their challenge, we want to help them improve. From providing flights all around the county to simply being a sober driver, we offer a variety of benefits for those in need. No vet, military member, nor first responder should ever have to be wanting such services, but unable to afford or get the aid they deserve.

How Are Funds Used?

If you’re wondering how your dollars are being directly used to benefit these men and women, here are a few ways we try to help. Firstly, we assist veterans, active duty military, and first responders to enable them to attend a recovery. This can include both logistics to attending helpful services, but also financial requirements that come along with this journey.

Funds raised by The Honor Movement Foundation are used completely to support:

Airfare to/from medical rehabilitation facilities

Hotel and lodging accommodations

Gaps in insurance coverage

Rent or mortgage payments during treatment

Covering unpaid leave during treatments

But our aid does not stop there. Our nonprofit foundation also provides funds for:

Sober rides

Medical Research and Treatments (STEM/STG)

Immediate financial assistance

From covering necessary bills, to filling in missing paychecks while seeking help, we want to step in to make the transition as seamless as possible for the family and loved ones of any veteran, active duty, and first responder.

Give Back to Those That Give Their All

The population that is served by The Honor Movement Foundation has a special place in our hearts, and for good reason. Our all-volunteer board of directors is filled with those who have served. We focus our attention on this nonprofit in our spare time because it is so very important.

We also know that many of our country’s citizens long for ways to give back to this community, just as much as we do. Veterans, active duty personnel, and first responders sacrifice each and every day to protect your life. From keeping our country secure and free, to ensuring your health, protection, and safety, these men and women are giving it all, up to and including their own lives at times, to be sure you can enjoy yours. It is no wonder so many want to find a way to do their part to say “thank you.”

To donate to The Honor Duty Foundation, please mail donations to:

The Honor Movement Foundation

42395 Ryan Rd.

Veterans and first responders are among the most courageous and selfless people in our society.

They put their lives on the line to protect and serve us, often facing stressful and traumatic situations the likes of which most of us will never face.

Not surprisingly, these experiences have lasting effects on their mental and emotional health.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, first responders—including firefighters, emergency medical services (EMS) and police officers—are at an increased risk for mental health issues such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, stress, and suicidal behaviors¹. In 2017, suicide deaths among firefighters and police officers outnumbered deaths in the line of duty¹.

As a community, we owe it to our veterans and first responders to support and help them cope with the challenges they face.

How to Support First Responders with Mental Health Battles

Fortunately, there are a variety of ways that we can serve and support our heroes as they work through mental health crisis.

Here are just a few:

Educate: educate yourself and others about the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and how to respond to them.

Some common signs include changes in mood, behavior, or personality, withdrawal from social activities, loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, increased use of alcohol or drugs, and thoughts of harming oneself or others¹.

If you notice any of these signs in a veteran or first responder we know, reach out to them, and express our concern and care. Encourage them to seek professional help and offer to assist them in finding the appropriate resources.

There are helplines that can provide immediate assistance in a crisis, or which can connect the individual to the help they need.

Numbers to call include:

Mental Health Crisis Lifeline: text 9-8-8

Veterans & First Responders in Crisis: 1-800-273-8255

The Honor Movement Foundation: 202-805-2636

The Marine Corps DISTRESS Line: 1-877-476-7734

Demonstrate: you can help support and encourage our heroes by showing your appreciation and gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

There are many ways you can do this, and get your whole family involved as well. Sending letters, notes, drawings, snacks, and hygiene items either directly to individuals you know personally, or through organizations like Operation Gratitude¹, which thanks first responders for their service, makes a meaningful impact in the lives of those serving us, who can often feel unseen and unappreciated.

You can also participate in events, like our annual Ruck to Remember, which honors our fallen heroes on Memorial Day and raises funds and awareness for the Honor Movement Foundation as we work to supports the families of the fallen and provide mental health, financial, and other resources for veterans, active duty military, and first responders.

Provide: you can also help provide emotional and practical support to the families and loved ones of first responders and veterans.

You can do this by checking in on them regularly, offering to help with household chores, childcare, or errands, listening to their concerns and feelings, and being there for them in times of need.

The schedule of a first responder or active-duty military individual can make balancing family life very difficult, so offering tangible help with everyday needs can go a long way in providing support that makes a huge difference in their life.

You can also provide financial support to organizations like ours, as we provide immediate financial relief to families of the fallen and help connect them to resources as they recover from their loss and transition into a life without their loved one.

Volunteer: finally, you can volunteer and/or donate to organizations that support veterans and first responders.

There are many organizations that provide various services and programs for veterans and first responders, such as counseling, peer support, wellness, education, financial support, crisis assistance, and advocacy.

At The Honor Foundation, we need more volunteers and donors who can help us on our mission as we strive to serve our emergency personnel, active military, and veterans who have been injured, who are battling addictions or mental health problems, or who are struggling with their transition to civilian life.

We need people like you to volunteer your time, skills, and/or resources or donate to support the work of serving those who have already served us.

What Will You Do?

Veterans and first responders are heroes who deserve our respect and recognition and who need our help.

By supporting them and their mental health, we can show them that we care and that they are not alone. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and honor their service.

So, who will you take a moment to write a note to or check on today?
If you’d like to learn more about how you can serve those who have served through The Honor Movement, visit our website today: Home – The Honor Movement Foundation

Source:

First Responder Resources – Veterans Affairs

Our veterans have made great sacrifices for our nation, and it’s important to recognize their service and give thanks. There are many ways in which individuals can support veterans and their families, from donating time or money to joining a community organization. In this blog post, we will take a look at some of the ways you can help those who have served our country.

Volunteer Your Time

If you have some extra time on your hands, consider volunteering at an organization that supports veterans. There are plenty of volunteer options available that can help make a difference in the lives of veterans. Opportunities may include helping out with events such as benefits or fundraisers; mentoring other veterans; providing assistance with job placement; and even just spending time with veterans in need of companionship. Volunteering your time is a great way to show your appreciation for those who’ve served our country while also making an impact on the lives of others.

The American Legion is one such group that provides numerous activities aimed at improving the lives of veterans nationwide. For example, they offer college scholarships for children of active-duty personnel; host events like parades commemorating fallen soldiers; run homeless shelters for those in need; and provide other forms of relief to deserving individuals.

Donate Money

If you don’t have much free time on your hands but still want to help out veterans in need, consider making a monetary donation to a veteran-focused charity or organization. There are many great organizations that offer financial assistance for vets who may not have access to other resources like healthcare or housing assistance. Make sure you do your research when selecting an organization so you know where your money is going and how it is being used.

Many credible charities such as the Wounded Warrior Project and Fisher House Foundation provide financial assistance for medical bills, housing needs, employment opportunities, mental health care, and more. Donations directly benefit those in need—and their tax deductible!

Even if you don’t have time or money to spare, you could also donate items like furniture, electronics, or clothing that can benefit veterans in your community.

Raise Awareness For Veteran Issues

Another way you can help is by raising awareness for veteran issues. You could start by sharing information about veteran-related topics on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter—this way, more people will learn about the issues faced by veterans and how they can lend their support. Additionally, holding events such as rallies or protests can be effective in drawing attention to important causes related to veteran services and rights.

There are many ways to help our nation’s heroes who served our country faithfully—and these three ideas are just the beginning! Volunteering your time at an organization dedicated to supporting veterans, donating money or items, and raising awareness for veteran-related issues all make a huge impact on the lives of those who bravely served in our military forces. By making just one small effort today, you’ll be able to give back something meaningful and lasting—the gift of hope—to those who’ve given so much for us already!

The post Giving Back to Our Veterans: What You Can Do to Help appeared first on The Honor Movement Foundation.

Veteran Transition to Civilian Life: The Challenges and Opportunities

The transition from military to civilian life can be both a challenging and rewarding process. Veterans often face challenges when it comes to reintegrating into their new environment and finding meaningful employment. At the same time, the military teaches important life skills such as leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills that can provide invaluable opportunities for veterans in the civilian world. With the right support, resources, and mentorship, veterans can find meaningful work that utilizes the skills and experiences they acquired while in the military. Ultimately, veterans have the unique opportunity to use the experience gained in the military to excel in their new lives and contribute to the civilian workforce.

The post Veteran Transition to Civilian Life: The Challenges and Opportunities appeared first on The Honor Movement Foundation.
